More Seniors Work Beyond Age 65

Edmond Sun, 3/18/07

Abstract:

Turning 65 used to mean two things -- a birthday party and a retirement party. A gold watch from your employer signififed the beginning of your golden years.

Although hitting the big six-five still is cause for celebration, it does not necessarily mark the end of a career any longer.

According to a study from Microsoft Business Resources, those 55 or older made up 13 percent of the workforce in 2000. By 2020, that number is expected to soar to 20 percent. By the end of this decade, 51 percent of the United States workforce will be composed of people older than 40. That will mark a 33 percent increase since 1980.

According to AARP, 69 percent of workers older than 45 plan to continue working past that once-magic age of 65.
