No Retirement for Many Boomers

Abstract:

Once upon a time, I thought I would retire when I reached a certain age. Now, full-time retirement seems as unlikely to be part of my future as winning the lottery.

I am not alone. According to retirement experts, most baby boomers in the United States can expect to work at least part-time during that stage of life that used to be designated for more leisurely pursuits. That was the gist of the message delivered by more than a dozen experts at a recent seminar on retirement issues, for journalists covering the topic, sponsored by the National Press Foundation.

Some baby boomers can't conceive of a life that doesn't include some type of employment.

But, as the experts also made clear, many baby boomers must work due to disappearing pensions or insufficient nest eggs.
