Retirement Can Wait

California Job Journal, 10/14/07

Abstract:

According to a recent survey, eight in ten baby boomers plan to continue working in their retirement years. That's about 76 million fifty-something workers with no intention of quitting anytime soon. Some many continue working out of financial necessity, others may do so to keep their healthcare benefits.

However, the majority will continue working simply because they still have the desire to be productive and part of a team. After spending 30-plus years in the workplace, the thought of spending the next 20 or 30 years not working at all seem ludicrous.

The most difficult aspect of staying in the workplace for some baby boomers may be the prospect of staying in their current occupation.

It is not uncommon for managers and executives in their mid- to late-50s to desire a change, especially those who have spent their careers in one field. But some are afraid to try something new. They decide to retire early, only to end up missing the workplace and attempting to make a comeback a couple of years later. However, after such a long absence, most will find it difficult to break back into the workforce at anywhere near the pay or prestige they had before retiring.
